5 Tips for Choosing Outfits for Family Photos

Family in complementary colors

Congratulations, you’ve booked a date for your family photo session! But how do you decide what clothes your family will wear? Here are 5 of the tips we tell our clients when preparing for their Cannonfire Photography family photo session.

1.   Choose complementary colors

We are featuring photos in this article that reflect choices we DO want you do make! Choose colors from complementary color families. However, don’t make multiple family members wear the exact same print/pattern. What might seem cute and adorable today may cause you to cringe a few years from now when that “matchy” outfit looks old and dated.

2.   Avoid khaki pants with white shirts

No offense to anyone who has ever used this outfit scheme for their family photos! But every time we see a family photo where everyone donned khaki pants with white shirts, we want to party like it’s 1999. (Because that is exactly when this look was popular!) We won’t geek out with all the photography science, but trust us when we say that white shirts can also throw off the color balance.

3.   Mix in fabrics such as denim

We’re not saying you can’t EVER use khaki. One option can be for several family members to wear denim. This way there is some visual interest because not every person looks the same.

4.   Choose clothes that everyone can have FUN wearing!

If your child hates the feel of a button-up collared shirt, you’ll also hate how uncomfortable they look every time you view your photos. Our family photo sessions are all about having fun and feeling the emotional connection between family members. Constantly reminding your child to stop tugging at their shirt collar is NOT an enjoyable way to spend your session time. We have much better ideas!

5.   Consider how your photos will be used

We take extra time to consult with you BEFORE your session to get to know as much as we can about you and your family. Our clients prefer for their photo memories to last well beyond a quick social media post that is quickly forgotten. Many of our Cannonfire Photography client families request we create custom canvas wall art to display in their home. What colors will you love to see everyone wearing as you view the canvas on your living room throughout each season of the year?

No matter if your family photo session is in downtown Winter Garden, Tucker Ranch, Horizon West, your home, or any other beautiful location in West Orange County, we want you to feel confident and relaxed!
